When I see great teaching, I see real-world, hands-on experiences. On a field trip to Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen, CA, my fifth grade students experienced colonial life first hand, literally. They were able to sign a document using a real quill pen. Although these students have seen and read about historical living, they were more engaged and remembered more when they actually experienced it!
