My name is Danielle Esposito, Retired NYS teacher. I am part of the Family Island Book Initiative (grassroots nonprofit organization based in Pound Ridge, NY). I brought my passion for teaching reading to the primary schools of Exuma, Bahamas. This photo was taken at our Book Fair this spring. I took this opportunity to assess students in reading. The students would meet me on the “van” bench to share their accomplishments in reading. The children were very proud to read to me. I was able to administer the DRA2 reading assessment. My goal is to assess the primary students of Exuma in reading, model how to administer assessments, use the information gained to target learning. I use every opportunity I can to meet with students…this book fair was a fun way for the children to be assessed. We then went into the book fair and picked the “just right” book! The lesson for the student was to learn how to select books. The slightly used books were donated from local NY schools, families, and libraries. The island does not have a children’s book store…these book fairs are one way we can get books into the hands of children. It was a great day of reading and enjoying books. We are spreading the love of reading…one book at a time. A great teacher uses every opportunity to create a “teachable” moment. I felt this was one of those times. We gave away over 1,ooo books during the fair! Every child walked away with books they could call their own.
