The high school Sustainability students of CREST and their 4th grade partners applied for and won a grant to build a “Sustainable Outdoor Learning laboratory” on the campus of Foothills Elementary. The high school students worked with their 4th grade partners in a collaborative STEM project to research, design and build an outdoor laboratory that included a pond (riparian area), signed nature trail, butterfly garden, outdoor lecture/presentation space, and birding/nesting area all within the sustainable desert habitat. The students worked in collaborative STEM teams to create and build the garden that will be used by the entire Foothills campus. The students researched and ordered materials and provided the manual labor to build the habitat. They also partnered with other groups on the PVHS campus to build woods for signage and owl boxes to go into the trees. This STEM-based hands-on activity promotes the general “Sustainability theme” that builds a K-12 STEM pipeline between the schools located within the Paradise Valley Unified School District
