When my teaching is inspired I know that students are learning how to be active and productive members of society. I teach high school social studies and my main objective in teaching besides teaching my curriculum is to teach students how to be good citizens. This year, my students picked a problem that they believed they could work to fix in our society that directly impacted them. We joined the KDR Challenge which stands for “Kids Driving Responsibly” and my students took on the problem of cell phones distracting teen drivers. They signed a pledge to not use their cell phones while driving and they even helped to pass a new law in Michigan that prohibits teens from using a cell phone when they are behind the wheel. My students learned this year that they have the ability to make a difference in the world and that is the best lesson that any teacher could work for.
