When my teaching is inspired, I connect the classroom to the real world. After using the planting requirements on the backs of seed packets to design a garden box, calculating the surface area of the box (for painting), and calculating the volume of the box (to know how much soil to buy), students became architects and drew models of the garden boxes in Google SketchUp.
