The student in white, Tyler, will be traveling with a group of students, teachers and parents to Sierra Leone, West Africa in November to conduct a solar workshop for the students in the Serabu region of Sierra Leone which is southwest of Bo. This photo is taken at one of our elementary schools where Tyler is teaching/practicing the educational skills that will be needed while in Africa. He is showing local sixth grade students how the sun is used to capture energy and recharge batteries. While in Africa, Tyler and this team will be conducting a workshop where solar cases will be built that have the capability to charge laptops and cell phones, provide light at night, power pico-projectors and speakers to present educational lessons in underresourced classrooms in developing countries. These cases can power 12 volt fans which keep the user cool and mosquitoes down which helps prevent malaria transmission; they can make colloidal silver which sterilzes water and acts as a natural antiseptic and antibiotic. They can also provide power for student designed cauterizing and suction devices to be used by doctors while performing surgery in third world countries. With the help of an inverter, the solar cases can also power 110 AC energy applications up to 120 Watts. Tyler and his team have developed a program called USA4AFRICA which seeks to “Rebuild a Country, One Village at a Time,” and more information can be found at USA4AFRICA.org
